Recipes, cooking and kitchen advice.
I started Mel's Plate to share my love of cooking and creating new recipes with others.
I have an amazing husband Tom, and two dogs: Draco and Venice.
We love to travel, cook, eat, and experience life!
Our motto is "Everything happens for a reason" and we try to enjoy every minute of this thing called life!
Cheers!
Salato = Italian for salty!
I created Salato to share some of my favorite seasonings with others.
From Herby-Salts to my specially formulated Dill or Smoky Blends- these tasty accompaniments are a vital part of my kitchen and the meals I prepare.
Contact for purchase - local MN sales only.
My goal is to catalog my favorite recipes and help other people create tasty items too! I'll also share some of my tips and tricks I've learned over the years I've been experimenting in the kitchen!
You don't need to be a great chef to cook delicious food, I'm proof that you can create delicious and memorable meals and learn as you go!
Utilize your space by organizing your items. I have one shelf for all my pasta, noodles, and rice. Another for my canned veggies, soups, etc. This will help when you are looking for ingredients.
I also sort my spices alphabetically, so they are easy to find and I don't end up with 5 different Paprika containers!
Look for my recipes with affordable items and easy instructions. I try to make a variety of items for many different taste levels.
Stocking up on items when on sale is key and taking advantage of local Farmer's Markets are some things I like to do not only to be healthier- but also to support local small businesses.
We also like to buy in bulk from our local butcher- they have a "frozen pack" where we get to pick 5 different cuts of meat in various weights for a discounted price.
Hate throwing away food that has expired? This is something we often struggle with-I use a log to track what I have, and when it is good through. Things with long shelf lives are nice to stock up on when on sale. This helps me because then I can plan out meals around expiration dates too.
Planning ahead during busy times in your schedule is key. I like to stock up on meat that can be frozen. Another tip I have is when making something that can be frozen like soups or lasagna, I make a double batch and freeze one. This can then be easily re-heated by my husband at a later time.
Where it began: please check out some of the recipes that inspired me to "share the wealth" on Instagram. You will also see yummy meals from restaurants, some local and some from traveling.
Please use these cooking tips and recipes for enjoying time with friends and family because at the end of the day it is what really counts. Cheers!
